Research Summary :

  • Our research turns Thailand’s marine and agricultural resources into science-based products for health and wellness. We began by studying the anatomy of the nervous system and reproductive organs of crustaceans such as the mud crab, blue swimming crab, and shrimp. That work identified the hormones and genes that control reproduction and led to practical ways to improve crab breeding for aquaculture. Today, under the Research Unit in Innovative Marine Biotechnology and Natural Bio-Resources for Sustainable Health and Wellness at Thammasat University, we explore bioactive compounds from sea cucumber, seaweed, sea grapes, Wolffia, crab shell waste, and Thai herbs. We study their effects on bone health, obesity, blood sugar control, inflammation, skin care, and Alzheimer’s disease, using cell models, gene expression analysis, molecular docking, and chemical profiling. We also work with coastal and farming communities to add value to local raw materials and reduce waste, supporting a green economy. Our discoveries have become real products, including dietary supplements, functional drinks, skincare, wound dressings, natural insect repellents, and AI-assisted medical devices. Many of these innovations have been recognized at international invention competitions, winning a Grand Prize and several gold and silver medals.
